Are you needing some good software in order to complete some projects on your computer but don't want to shell out lots of your hard earned money to buy software? If so you came to the right place as I also hate spending money on software if its unnecessary. Most times there are free and/or open source alternatives to the big name software companies if you know where to look. Lucky for you I have done all the work to compile the various software into one nice quick and easy to use page. Since you are using the software for personal use rather then business use there are tons of free options available. So lets dive right in so you can get more use out of your computer! Simply click on the item to expand the details where you can find a description, website for more information, and the download link. Another advantage to using software for personal use is if you don't find exactly what you need on this page you can also freely use the software listed on the commercial use page.

This page is currently in beta which means it is not completed and will be edited constantly. The final page may look nothing like it currently does. In order to know which items are done and linked look for this icon . The ones with my guides completed that include comparison charts will have this icon . Any item with no icons will not have any links and likely unfinished text. If an item is paid only and I was unable to find a free alternative it will have this icon .

Anti-Virus

First and foremost every machine connected to the internet must have an anti-virus. There are many programs available including some free ones. For personal use there are many more options then for commercial use. However the best free one I have found so far is the same one I recommended for commercial use. The one I recommend is not only because its free but it also includes a firewall if desired so you can get two crucial security programs in one at no cost! It is called Comodo Free Internet Security Software.

Firewall

Depending on your internet usage and security requirements you may be fine with the basic firewall built into windows. If you are looking for protection for your whole network through one device it would require setting up custom software on your router. I may add a project on this in the future if there is enough demand for it, contact me and let me know. For personal use there are many more options then for commercial use. Password Manager

With every website requiring its own accounts it can quickly become a pain to keep track of passwords. We all know we should use different passwords on every site but after 10+ it starts to become a pain to remember. Most of us end up making one password and using it everywhere. However with all the news of companies getting hacked and the usernames and passwords being stolen, using different passwords is more important then ever before. So how about making just one very secure password and letting the program create passwords for each site for you? This is the solution I use so my 300+ passwords are all separate and secure and I only need to know 1. I highly recommend KeePass which is free and open source. There are two versions one is called Professional Edition (2.x) and Classic Edition (1.x). The major differences is classic edition does not require the .NET Framework and since it does not it also lacks quite a few features, see here. Despite the name both are free so the one I highly recommend is KeePass Professional Edition 2.x. It has many more features and is the version you will need in order to use things like KeeWeb which can run on any device with a web browser. Being open source it has many unofficial contributions and ports making it able to run on just about any device.

Office Suite

One program we all require at some point or another is a word editor and spreadsheet. At other points we sometimes need a presentation maker, a diagram maker, and a database managing program. Most of us end up using programs like Microsoft Office™ however there is a fantastic full office suite for free called Libre Office.

Email Manager

Though most email services, including those self hosted, tend to have a web mail that lets you login via the browser it can be more efficient to have a local copy of all the emails so you only have to download the new ones. Not only that but with powerful filter tools you can save yourself tons of time if you setup filters. Many emails are low priority such as newsletters or promos but can quickly overtake your emails you actually care about. When you use the filters properly it can move all of those to a sub folder to check when you have extra time or are going to make a purchase. That way you only see them when you need to. One highly useful trick to sort all newsletters and such with one filter is create a filter that searches of the email body contains Unsubscribe. Any emails that are not spam or scams have to include an unsubscribe option to not be classified as spam. So by filtering all with it you can quickly cut hundreds of less important emails down to the handful of important emails. The best email manager I have found is Mozilla Thunderbird.

General Use Software:

Web Browser

Likely to be the most frequently used program you ever install simply due to its versatility. Not only can you browse your favorite websites. You can run full web based programs in it with services such as Google Docs. Nearly everything the internet has to offer most times can be connected to via your web browser. When it comes to web browsers I typically use two, my personal favorite Firefox and my second favorite Google Chrome. Both have their strengths and weaknesses and really there is no harm in having both installed. Then if a website doesn't work on one for whatever reason you can boot up the other.

Archive Manager

Email is great but lots of times our attachments are too large to send or we have multiple files to send. In cases like this it can be easier to attach a zip archive to the email. That isn't its only purpose but how about when you download a program or file that is a different format such as .rar, .cab, etc? Or how about when you need to save some old files but want them to take as little possible hard drive space as they can? In all of these cases I highly recommend 7-Zip. Not only can it extract tons of archive types but if you create a archive using Ultra 7z format compression it is the smallest archives I have ever found. I use it for most my old large files on backup drives. For large folders it can take hours depending on your system specs but once its done it is a rather small file easy to store for later.

Screenshot Capture

Do you ever need to take many screen shots in a row and don't want to have to stop between each screenshot to import it into a image editor to crop it down? Maybe you just need to email a screenshot and want to cut out some steps? Maybe you need to save it in dropbox, load it directly in paint, or just copy it to the clipboard? In all of these cases the program I recommend is called Greenshot. It also has features such as capture active window or select the area to save. It replaces the built in screenshot program and any time you push the Print Screen (Prt Scr) key it will take the screenshot. I have mine set so any time I press that it takes a screenshot then lets me drag and drop a rectangle of what on the screen I wish to capture.
